LICKING CO, Ohio (WTVN) -- A barn fire has killed nearly 50 animals on a farm in southwestern Licking County early Thursday.

Fire crews were called to 11337 Watkins Road in rural Pataskala. They found the barn fully engulfed in flames when they arrived just before 2 a.m.

After putting out the fire, firefighters discovered several animals had been trapped inside including goats, cows, and pigs.

They were able to save a number of animals in an adjacent chicken coop.

Fire officials say the sheer size of the barn and the lack of fire hydrants made it a challenging fire to put out.  Water had to be brought in by tanker trucks.

No word yet on what sparked the fire, but the owner says he was using heat lamps in the barn.
