NEWARK, Ohio (WTVN) -- Bed bugs prompted about 100 students at Newark High School to leave class early Friday.

The district first discovered the problem on Wednesday, but was told by the health department to simply clean the area where they were found. Thursday a student was found with bed bugs on them. They were sent home and the classroom they were in cleaned, according to Seth Roy, community outreach coordinator at Newark High School.

Notification was sent out on Friday.

"We sent a letter home to high school parents this afternoon really in response to the rumors that the situation was worse than it really was," Roy said.

Extra cleaning crews will be brought in to make sure there isn't a problem when students return on Monday. Information about how to deal with bed bugs has been posted to the school website as well.
