CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WTVN) -- A dozen homes on George Hollow, Woods Hollow, and Wilson Run Roads were evacuated due to a large brush fire that started around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area.

Franklin Township Fire Chief Mike Menendez told our news partners, ABC6, the fire charred about 35 acres near Scioto Trails State Park.

Fire crews from eight township fire departments were called to the scene. The terrain is heavily wooded and very hilly.

"We're seeing smoke all the way from the north side of Circleville on our way down here to Ross County," said Steve Slater in Sky6.

School buses from the Southeastern Local Schools had to be re-routed around the area.

The fire was contained around 4:15 p.m., but the fire flared up again Tuesday evening.

No injuries were reported.

An illegal burn is likely to blame for the fire. It is against the law to burn from 6am - 6pm during the months of March, April, May, October, and November.

The National Weather Service had placed a large portion of southern Ohio under a risk for "enhanced fire danger" due to warm temperatures, low humidity, and high winds.
