Reshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett threw a pair of second half touchdowns, including an 80 yard strike to Devin Smith, as Ohio State broke open a close game late and beat Navy 34-17.
Barrett, in his first career game and first career start, completed 12 of his 15 passes for 226 yards with the two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 50 yards on nine carries.
The Buckeyes trailed at the half 7-6 but scored early in the third quarter to go ahead 13-7 on a 61 yard fumble return by linebacker Darron Lee. Navy responded with a four play, 84 yard drive to retake the lead 14-13.
Later in the third quarter, after a defensive stop by Ohio State, Barrett hit Smith in stride to give Ohio State a 20-14 lead and they never trailed after that.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott and receiver Michael Thomas scored fourth quarter touchdowns as Ohio State was able to put the game away.
