MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (WTVN) -- A Knox County man has been charged in connection with the death of his 5-month old son.

Michael Wingett, 24, of Fredricktown, is accused of shaking his son to death on May 12.

A preliminary autopsy found injuries of blunt force trauma to the head and torso, rib fractures, bruised lungs, and internal bleeding.

"It's been described to me as if the child had been in a car crash and an air bag had deployed hitting the child in the head and upper torso if the child was unrestrained," said Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher.

Wingett is also charged with inducing panic for allegedly making a bomb threat against the Knox County Children’s Services offices on May 14. That call came after the agency took custody of a 5-year old child in the same home.

The charges were presented to the Knox County Grand Jury after Wingett gave a statement to sheriff's office investigators on Friday.

"Mr. Wingett was the last person in the household to put the child in the crib before the child was found unresponsive," Thatcher said.

Bond has not yet been set.
