COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) --Donations made to the Columbus Zoo in response to the killing of a giraffe in Denmark will be kept in a fund to help other threatened animals.

A spokeswoman tells The Columbus Dispatch over $5,700 has been donated to the Animals in Crisis fund amid an outcry over the Feb. 9 giraffe killing.

The Copenhagen Zoo says it killed the healthy giraffe to prevent inbreeding. The carcass was butchered in front of a crowd and fed to lions.

The Columbus Zoo's director emeritus, celebrity zookeeper Jack Hanna, was among those who condemned what happened. He'd gathered $100,000 in pledges to help save a second giraffe at Denmark's Jyllands Park Zoo, which had said it might have to kill that giraffe for similar reasons.
