Columbus Zoo seeks permanent levy

Columbus Zoo seeks permanent levy
Posted January 9th, 2014 @ 8:46am by The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) --The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium wants more money from taxpayers to pay for improvements and expansion.

The zoo board voted Wednesday to put a permanent, 1.25-mill property-tax issue on the May ballot. It's the first time the board has asked for a continuing levy.

The additional money would enable the zoo to build a downtown satellite facility, expand the aquarium, build a new animal hospital and make other improvements.

The request now goes to Franklin County commissioners for approval. The current 10-year levy will expire in 2015.

The current levy costs the owner of a $100,000 house in the county $21.29 a year in taxes. The 1.25-mill levy would more than double that, to $43.75 a year.
