DELAWARE, Ohio (WTVN) -- Delaware County health officials say at least six suspected mumps cases have been reported in the county.

This comes on the heels of the Ohio State University outbreak which has spread into Franklin County.

"At this point we do not have a clear connection with the Ohio State University although as our investigation progresses we may find that or we may not," said Delaware County Health Commissioner Sheila Hiddleson.

There have been at least 87 cases reported. Of those, 70 are directly linked to the Ohio State University campus. Those numbers include cases in Fairfield, Hamilton, Licking, and Union Counties.

The cases in Delaware County range in age from children to adults, though Hiddleson wasn't able to give exact ages.

Olentangy Local Schools have confirmed they have a suspected case of mumps at Scioto Ridge Elementary School and Olentangy High School.

The best defense against the highly contageous disease is frequent hand washing, covering your cough or sneeze, and getting a second dose of the vaccination.
