Neck and Neck: Giraffes arrive at Columbus Zoo

POWELL, Ohio (WTVN) --Conner and Dasher are getting used to their new digs at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The 3-year old male reticulated giraffes are the first that will be part of the new Africa exhibit, opening in May of 2014.

The giraffes arrived Monday from the Binder Park Zoo in Michigan.

Adam Felts, Assistant Curator-Africa Region for the zoo, says both Conner and Dasher are adapting well to their new environment, which is a specially-built 180' by 54' barn.

As part of the zoo's routine animal health protocol, the giraffes are in quarantine.

As the giraffes get accustomed to their new home, zoo staffers will work with them to get them used to the public feeding them. A full-grown giraffe can be as tall as 18 feet and weigh up to 2,600 pounds.
