COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- There is no law in Ohio preventing sex offenders in the state from handing out candy to trick-or-treaters.
"I think it's something certainly that the legislature should look at," said Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine.
The Ohio Attorney General's Office website has a searchable database of sex offenders around the state. DeWine says it's a good idea for parents to check it out before taking their little ghost or gobblin out to gather candy.
"I don't think parents ever really think of that, but they really should check to see where the sex offenders live," he said.
Some communities have local laws that prohibit sex offenders from passing out candy while others hold mandatory meetings for sex offenders during trick-or-treat hours.
DeWine thinks knowing where sex offenders are is something parents should do anyway.
