COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- The Ohio House voted 82-0 to approve a bill making "Hang on Sloopy" the state's official rock song.
"If the legislature will just go ahead and pass the darn thing, we can get on to more important things," said Rep. Michael Stinziano, a Columbus Democrat who's father introduced a similar resolution in 1985.
The resolution passed nearly 30 years ago was temporary, so there was a push to put it into Ohio law. To help lobby lawmakers, the Ohio State University Marching Band made an appearance at the Ohio Statehouse.
"We would like to certainly make sure that this is the official rock song for the state of Ohio," said Rep. Cheryl Grossman, a Grove City Republican.
House Clerk Dustin Russell got a standing ovation when he read the lyrics of the song, as part of the bill, in about 13 seconds.
The measure now goes to the Ohio Senate and if they approve it then it will be up to Gov. John Kasich, an Ohio State graduate, to sign it into law.
