COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Something went horrifically wrong with the swinging "Fire Ball" ride at the Ohio State Fair, leaving one man dead and at least seven others hurt.

Fair officials say a row of seats on the ride broke free Wednesday, launching riders onto the midway.

Ohio Department of Agriculture officials say the ride was inspected at several different stages and was approved for operation.

Governor John Kasich called the accident the worst tragedy in the fair's history.  He ordered all rides shut down for further inspections, though the rest of the fair will remain open Thursday.

In a statement early Thursday, the fair says its "hearts are heavy for the families of those involved."
