Kings Island to Retire "Vortex"

MASON, Ohio (WTVN)--Kings Island amusement park, near Cincinnati, has announced that one of its most popular roller coasters is retiring after this season.

The Park's Manager of Digital Marketing, Don Helbig, posted a blog Friday morning, saying the "Vortex" will retire on October 27th, after 33 seasons of thrilling riders.

Helbig says the ride has reached the end of its service life, after debuting in April of 1987.

Arrow Dynamics constructed the coaster exclusively for Kings Island, which goes upside down six times.

Helbig says it's given more than 45-million rides during its service time, the 7th most in the park's history.
