Judge Indefinitely Delays Donald Trump's Classified Documents Trial

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon indefinitely postponed the classified documents criminal case against former President Donald Trump. The case was scheduled to begin on May 20.

Judge Cannon cited a number of pre-trial issues that must be resolved before the trial can start.

"The Court also determines that finalization of a trial date at this juncture -- before resolution of the myriad and interconnected pre-trial and CIPA issues remaining and forthcoming -- would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court's duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court, critical [Classified Information Procedures Act ] issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparations necessary to present this case to a jury," Cannon explained in her order.

Cannon also scheduled a series of hearings to resolve the issues between May and July. The first hearings on motions to dismiss the case will be held on May 22.

If those hearings are not postponed, the trial could begin as early as August, just three months before the presidential election.
