It was quite a first round for Rory McIlroy. He leads by three shots headed to round two of the Memorial Tournament after a 9-under 63. Making it even more remarkable is that McIlroy's day included a double-bogey six on the par four 14th. It helps when you eagle the very next hole, which McIlroy did. In fact the 25-year old eagled both par fives on the back nine and played the four par fives at 5-under.

The number one ranked player in the world played in the same group as McIlroy and had a good day...but is still six shots back. Scott fired a 3-under par 69. Here are his post-round thoughts:
The most popular player in this year's Memorial field, Phil Mickelson, had a strange day. After a birdie on 15, Mickelson was in contention at 5-under but the wheels came off the bus after that. Mickelson hit water on the par three 16th and bogeyed and then came unglued with double-bogeys on 17 and 18 to finish at even par. Here's Mickelson's first round thoughts:
