I wanted to follow up on my blog post this week about the passing this week of 8-year old Lacey Holsworth.

"Princess Lacey" passed away early Tuesday morning. She is the young girl who became the friend and inspiration to Michigan State basketball star Adreian Payne. Their story became well known in East Lansing and to all of Spartan Nation, but soon the entire Big Ten became aware of their special relationship thanks to features on BTN's "The Journey."

Lacey and her family traveled to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament, with Payne carrying her up the ladder to cut down the net after the Spartans won the championship. Soon the nation learned of "Princess Lacey" as the Holsworth family traveled to see the Spartans make their run to the Elite Eight at the NCAA tournament.

Even though his team came up short of the Final Four, Payne was invited to Dallas to participate in the slam dunk contest and Lacey came with him. She returned home last Saturday and three days later, she was gone.

Wednesday, Michigan State students held a candlelight vigil to honor the life of Lacey and MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo spoke beautifully about a young girl's fight, toughness and bravery. In short, he was terrific. The video is posted above. It's worth watching...but have some Kleenex nearby.
