The main goal of our group is to find the best pizza in Columbus. Under that main goal, we want to "discover" new/small pizza joints and review the classic places in Columbus. One of those "classic" jaunts is clearly Plank's Cafe and Pizzeria on Parsons Avenue.
From the moment you walk in, you are smacked in the face with a completely unique atmosphere. Not only that, you can't help but notice the abundance of OSU regalia on the walls. One of the things I personally look for is pictures of past regulars, old staff, etc. We had some of that up on the walls as well. These things are small in the grand scheme of things, but it contributes to the depth of personality that Plank's has with Columbus.
We were there about 8:30pm on a Saturday night and it was understandably busy. Our group was seated quickly and asked for drink orders. While a "free refill" fountain beverage is preferable, the only option was a 12oz can. We were also really down with the crazy mix of music, too. Somehow, the uncensored version of "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore made it on. After a few loud f-bombs, the song was quickly scrubbed and changed to "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.
We ordered a wide array of pie; six which included Hawaiian, Pepperoni, Sausage, and even a Cajun amongst others. I was really looking forward to the Cajun pizza, but it tasted like a can of chili on a pizza. Not bad, but it wasn't what I expected. The signature "sweet" crust isn't usually my thing, but the other guys of the "Men's Pizza Coalition" enjoyed it. Here's what some of them said overall:
- Evan: "Atmosphere and service were great. The crust was kinda polarizing."
- Cliff: "Nice, old rustic environment."
- Nathan: "They had bacon and bratwurst on pizza. I didn't think that was possible."
- Jon: "I paid more money here than I did anywhere else."
Here's our numerical takeaway:
- Atmosphere: 4.5 (out of 5, very unique).
- Price: 3.0 (out of 5, it was a tad high at $14 a person).
- Taste: 7.5 (out of 10, not too shabby).
- Location: 3.5 (out of 5, easy access of I-70).
- Service: 4.0 (out of 5, very well done).
BOTTOM LINE: 21.5 / 30. You have to respect a place like Plank's for being around as long as they have. It's a total classic to the Columbus area and is a must-visit (even if you can't make up your mind about the sweet crust). Just go and make up your mind for yourself! While the $14 tab a person was a bit steep from the usual $10, it was a decent good time.
