VIDEO: OhioHealth responds to incident with Grant officers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--OhioHealth Grant Medical Center President Michael Lawson has released a video and an updated statement on the incident from Monday, involving three security officers outside Grant Medical Center.

The incident, which was caught on video by a bystander, showed the officers using pepper spray and their batons on a man who took a step toward them and flicked a cigarette on them.

Lawson says while the officers followed protocol in their initial investigation, "We believe there was an opportunity for our team to look beyond their official training and exercise more compassion, coupled with good judgment, in engaging Mr. Adams."

That man was reportedly being sought for allegedly stealing something from the hospital cafeteria.

A statement accompanying the video from Lawson says, "Although our investigation is not yet complete into the incident that happened at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center involving three of our Protective Service officers and a visitor at Grant, we want to provide an update.

The update includes the findings of our initial investigation, how we can learn from this situation, and how we could have handled things differently in alignment with our values as an organization.

This update was shared with OhioHealth associates and our intent is to share it with the general public as well.Once the investigation is complete, we will make a determination about further necessary actions."

The officers involved remain suspended until the investigation is complete.
