Columbus police hope dashcam video files can be recovered

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) --Columbus police are investigating an employee's accidental deletion of about 100,000 dashboard camera video files.

Police Chief Kim Jacobs says they learned last week about the mass deletion of the files, which happened last May.

Jacobs says most of the files were from 2015 and right now, they're checking to see whether the files can be retrieved.

As for the impact on pending cases, Jacobs says that isn't clear yet.

Officials are trying to determine what videos may have contained evidence and whether they had already been transferred to detectives' or prosecutors' files.

Jacobs says about one in four of the files involve recordings that wouldn't be relevant to criminal matters.
