Dashboard footage of Philando Castile

The dashboard camera footage showing the fatal police shooting of Philando Castile by a Minnesota police officer last year was released yesterday (June 20th), days after St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of manslaughter and all other charges in the case. The video was shown to jurors and described repeatedly, but had never been released publicly. It shows that what began as a traffic stop over Castile's brake lights being out quickly escalated when Castile politiely told the officer he had a gun and Yanez immediately and repeatedly told him not to pull it out before firing seven times into the car. Castile had a permit to carry the gun, and his girlfriend could be heard saying he wasn't pulling it out. Yanez testified at trial that Castile ignored his commands not to pull out his gun and he feared for his life. The July 2016 shooting got a lot of attention at the time because Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, broadcast the bloody aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live.
