COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--If the plan from the Ohio Department of Transportation is a success, traffic along I-670 East during afternoon drive could get a lot easier.
ODOT announced that beginning in 2018, there will be a "smartlane" from 3:30PM to 6:30PM Monday through Friday, on 670 East between 4th Street and I-270. During that time, the left shoulder becomes a travel lane.
Department spokesman Matt Bruning says it's in conjunction with an improvement project for I-670 and I-270 in Columbus. "We have to add extra cameras, we have to add extra message boards to alert drivers when that smartlane is open and when it's closed", Bruning said.
He says if the project is a success, they may look at implementing the plan on other highway stretches in the area.
At the I-270/670 interchange, ODOT will build two new ramp bridges to carry I-670 eastbound traffic to I-270 and I-270 traffic through the Easton area.
