Lastest Columbus Homicide Committed in Self-Defense

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Columbus Police say the city's latest homicide was actually an act of self-defense.

Officers were called out to the In-Town Suites, on Hilton Corporate Drive, just after 10PM Thursday, on a report of a shooting.

Investigators say 29-year-old Porfilio Hernandez got into a scuffle with his live-in girlfriend, 27-year-old raven Torres. During the incident, Hernandez pulled out a gun and struck her. Torres was then able to gain control of the firearm, and fired the weapon as Hernandez was attacking.

Hernandez was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition, but later died.

Police say due to witness statements and physical evidence, Hernandez's death appears to be in self-defense, and charges will not be filed against Torres.

While the investigation continues, it is the city's 142nd homicide of 2017.
