Restaurants Encouraging People to Order Out for 'Great American Takeout'

People across the country are being encouraged to order from their favorite restaurants on Tuesday, March 24, as part of a grassroots effort aimed at supporting businesses that have been struggling in recent weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The idea comes as millions of Americans have been asked to stay home and nonessential businesses have closed as part of the fight to curb the spread of the virus. Local and national restaurants are encouraging people who've grown sick and tired of their own cooking to support the restaurant industry by ordering takeout or delivery. People are asked to show off their meals on social media, posting with the hashtag #GreatAmericanTakeout to help spread the word.

Some restaurants and bars have had to shut their doors amid the ongoing pandemic, while others switched to delivery or takeout, with dining rooms closed by orders from the state. In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti signed an emergency order Monday that would allow residents to order a drink to go from their favorite restaurant. Garcetti said he hopes the move will help generate more revenue for restaurants.

Some experts say the restaurant industry could see 7 million people lose their jobs over the next three months because of the pandemic.
