OHSAA Cancels Winter Sports Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio High School Athletic Association has gone from postponing the state winter sports championships to canceling them this season.

The association made the decision Thursday after originally delaying the Wrestling, Girls Basketball, and Ice Hockey championships, which were all scheduled for the weekend of March 13th in Columbus.

The Boys Basketball state championships were also originally scheduled for the following weekend.

Earlier Thursday, OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass and his staff communicated with the schools that were still competing in those winter tournaments to announce the decision.

The last time the OHSAA canceled events was during World War II, but the first girls basketball state tournament was in 1976, and the first ice hockey state tournament was in 1978.

The start of the OHSAA’s spring sports of softball, lacrosse, baseball, track and field and boys tennis is still postponed, which coincides with schools not being open.
