Five people were killed and many others are missing after a volcanic island in New Zealand erupted while dozens of tourists were on it. Police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said there were fewer than 50 people on the island when it erupted, some of them passengers from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, and 23 had been taken off, including the five dead. There had been no contact with any of those still missing. Most of the 18 who survived were injured, with some of them suffering severe burns. Scientists had recently noted an uptick in volcanic activity on the island, and people were questioning why tourists were allowed to go there.
