Last night, during the 2019 Miss Universe Competition,Steve Harvey announced the wrong contestant as the National Costume Contest winner. This comes four years after he accidentally crowned the wrong winner of Miss Universe back in 2015.
Prior to announcing the winner of Miss Universe, Harvey revealed that the winner of the costume contest was Philippines and the audience cheered. The woman looked confused and then grabbed Steve's microphone and corrected him, saying that she was actually representing Malaysia.
Steve was not too happy about the faux pas, and blamed the teleprompter, saying that it stated Philippines as the winner. He explained, “Okay, well, let me explain something to you. I just read that in the teleprompter. Y’all got to quit doing this to me. I can read, they said now, they’re trying to fix it now. See, this what they did to me back in 2015. Played me short like that. This is Malaysia. I really love this national costume of Malaysia. This is crazy.”
STEVE GETS DRAGGED FOR CARTEL JOKE
Steve also got dragged on social media after making a joke about "the cartel" while talking to Miss Colombia. Back in 2015, it was Miss Colombia Arianda Gutierrez that he announced as the winner when it was in fact Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines. So, last night when he announced that Miss Colombia Gabriela Tafur as one of the contestants that made the top 20, he spelled the name of Colombia out loud and added, “Nailed it." He later said, “The cartel hasn’t forgiven me."
People on social media dragged the comedian, with one person tweeting, "That was not only disrespectful but absolutely unacceptable and unnecessary.” Another person wrote, “Maybe someone should tell #SteveHarvey that his jokes about Cartels in Colombia are rude and disrespectful, he encourages wrong stereotypes.”
