Report: Texas Coach Source For Brett McMurphy

Author Jeff Snook reports today that Texas coach Tom Herman was the source for the Brett McMurphy story that eventually led Ohio State to put Buckeye head man Urban Meyer on leave while they investigated his handling of domestic violence accusations against a former assistant.

McMurphy uncovered police reports that alluded to domestic disputes between former Buckeye wide receivers coach Zach Smith and his ex-wife Courtney Smith filed in 2009 and 2015.

In 2009, Smith and Meyer were both at Florida, and Meyer told reporters at Big Ten media day that investigators, whom he did not identify, informed him the charges were false.

Meyer also denied having any knowledge of the 2015 incident, but he has since retracted that statement issuing a tweet that instead said he followed proper protocol.

That series of developments led Ohio State to announce an investigation that is expected to last two weeks. Meyer is on paid administrative leave until the investigation's completion.

For his part, Herman has refused to comment on the developments.

Meanwhile, a source close to the Smith family has told 105.7 The Zone that Herman and his wife Michelle offered financial support to Courtney Smith in the form of a payment that was meant to go toward her legal bills.

Courtney Smith's attorney has not responded to our request for comment.

UPDATE: Herman has since confirmed that his family did provide financial assistance to Courtney Smith.

REPORTER'S NOTE: Original report identified payment coming from the Herman family as being $10,000. Although that is what our source shared with us, we have deleted the specific amount out of an abundance of caution.
