Big Ten Teleconference-Minnesota Week

Highlights of today's appearance by Urban Meyer on the Big Ten teleconference:

  • Meyer described linebacker Pete Werner as an elite player and elite person, who is very gifted.
  • When asked about the Buckeyes playing well in the second half of games this season, he credited their depth and strength staff.
  • He described Minnesota as a top-20 defense, and he complimented their ability to keep the ball in front of them and not give up big plays.
  • Ohio State is giving up too many penalties, but Meyer acknowledged that is likely to happen with a team that stresses being aggressive. Meyer said he trusts that allowing his players to let loose will result in a reward that outweighs the risk of giving up more penalty yards. He did add that one area where they can't take penalties, though, is the kicking game.
  • When offensive lineman Brady Taylor returns, it is unlikely to impact the starting lineup, but it will give OSU some necessary depth.
  • Meyer had no update on running back Brian Snead, who has been sidelined
  • Chase Young, Johnathon Cooper, and Dre'Mont Jones have contributed to the pass rush, but other players need to do more in that area and are working to do so. Having Robert Landers healthy should help there, too.
  • Brian Hartline was praised for his work as the team's interim wide receivers coach.
  • Malik Barrow is "still rehabbing" from injury.
