A Big News Day At Ohio State

Ohio State football today announced the hiring of two men to be the team's co-defensive coordinators. They are San Francisco 49er's defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley and Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison.

Hafley will work with members of the Buckeye secondary. Mattison's positional duties have yet to be assigned.

At the same time, OSU confirmed promoting defensive line coach Larry Johnson. He now carries the additional title of associate head coach.

That is already a fairly substantive overhaul of the defensive staff, but there are reports that more changes could be in the works.

Head coach Ryan Day tweeted that last year's defensive coordinator, Greg Schiano, would be pursuing opportunities in the NFL.

"I want to thank coach Greg Schiano for the example he set every day, for the players and the members of this coaching staff, of what it means to be selfless, committed, and dedicated. Our players saw these attributes in Greg and they learned from his example. I, personally, also want to thank Greg for his wisdom and thoughtful guidance during my time as acting head coach this season." -Ryan Day

Oklahoma has already announced the addition of former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Alex Grinch, so--from a defensive perspective--that just leaves the status of Billy Davis and Taver Johnson up in the air.

Also today, Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins announced that he is declaring for the NFL Draft.

This declaration is not a surprise. Although he told reporters who covered the Rose Bowl that there was a 50-50 chance he would return, Haskins is projected to be an early first round draft pick.

With Haskins turning pro, this spring is expected to feature a quarterback battle between Tate Martell, Matthew Baldwin, and Georgia transfer Justin Fields--whose addition was just confirmed today.
