Even though Reds shortstop Zack Cozart went on the 10-day disabled list with a quad strain Monday, there was good news if you're rooting for Cozart to receive his bizarre gift from teammate Joey Votto. According to Votto, Cozart has expressed to him an affinity for donkeys.
"He's a big donkey guy," Votto said in a recent interview with Fox Sports Ohio. "The last three years we've had a conversation in spring training about his affection for donkeys and every single year I've said 'my man...if you make the all-star team, I'm going to buy you a donkey."
Well Monday, Major League Baseball released the latest all-star voting and Cozart, having a career year batting .320 with 9 home runs and 33 RBI's, is leading the shortstop voting, ahead of the L.A. Dodgers Corey Seager. If that holds, Votto promises to live up to the conversation and purchase a donkey which he says could end up in the Reds clubhouse.
"It's not going to get its own locker but it's going to come into the clubhouse," Votto said. "It'll show up in the clubhouse, you guys will get to meet it, (Cozart) will probably name it and we'll see what happens."
All-Star voting is in its final 10 days (it closes June 29, at 11:59 p.m) and Votto is urging Reds fans to keep punching Cozart's name at the ball park, or on the internet.
"If you vote for Zack Cozart, I'm getting him a donkey," Votto said. "After that, we can all name him together."
