Ohio State made official the story we broke for you on WTVN and 105.7 The Zone Tuesday morning. Former Buckeye basketball hoops star Scoonie Penn is joining new basketball coach Chris Holtmann's staff as the Director of Player Development.
Scoonie was part of our team at WTVN and 105.7, the Zone this past year, working with former Buckeye captain Tony White on Basketball Bucksline. He's as quality an individual you will ever meet and he will be missed but I could not be happier for him. Coaching has been an interest of Scoonie's for years and this opportunity is both well deserved and a great opportunity.
"I've always felt like coaching was a calling of mine," Scoonie said. "There isn't a better place to have a chance to learn than the university I attended an care so much about. It's going to be fun to learn from Coach Holtmann and the rest of the staff."
Scoonie's role is not as an assistant coach, but he will be able to work with players on a day-to-day basis. His passion for Ohio State basketball, his competitiveness and his knowledge of the game makes this an absolute slam dunk. I'm admittedly biased because of my fondness for the guy, but I'm not the only one who thinks so. Here's some of the reaction Tuesday to the hiring. Congratulations Scoonie!!
We really look forward to having Scoonie a part of our staff. Please join me in welcoming Scoonie and his family back! https://t.co/mOBBlTsWCF— Chris Holtmann (@ChrisHoltmann) July 11, 2017
With Ohio State adding the great Scoonie Penn to its staff, look for the Buckeyes to really recruit Columbus HARD. Scoonie knows his stuff— Zach Fleer (@ZachFleer270) July 11, 2017
