Buckeyes Begin "Game Ready" Week

posted by Matt McCoy -

Ohio State football training camp continues, but the focus is starting to turn. With the Buckeye's now closer to the opener at Indiana, than the beginning of camp, it's starting to look a little more like football.

"It started this week. It's game-ready week and situation week," coach Urban Meyer said. "We put in two-minute (offense) today. We started to install against Indiana's base offense, base defense, so that's about -- and that's normal. Our coach told me this is actually our fourth week of camp. Now, he cheats. He counts that one Thursday and Friday as camp, but still, we've been together for a long time, and it's time to start getting ready to go play a game."

Here are a few other highlights from Meyer's presser.

On the play in camp of JT Barrett: "His accuracy and just his energy level right now is incredible. He's providing that energy for everybody. He's always done that, but I can tell that this is -- he's got complete ownership and everything going on in that offense, his relationship with (quarterback coach) Ryan Day is incredible, and his skill set or the thing he's most improved at right now is accuracy. Very accurate player right now."

On the battle between Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell to be Barrett's back-up: "Well, Tate is in the mix. Tate gives us a weapon. He's done some really nice things for us. He's still getting a grasp of the offense, but I'd say the true backup right now is between Joe and Dwayne."

On the Buckeyes experience and leadership because of their seven 5th year seniors: "You can't put a price tag on that, and I saw that developing throughout the off-season and in the spring practice. It's unusual. I don't know if we've ever had that. You'd have to go back some years because we just don't -- usually don't redshirt guys with the intent that they'll be here in five years nowadays. And the way -- and sometimes the guys are here because they don't play. These guys are -- like you said, we have seven, and I don't know off the top of my head, I can't remember who they are, but the ones I'm thinking of, they're our best players. So it's very unusual."
