On Eve Of Opener, Meyer Removes Two More Stripes

posted by Matt McCoy -

Just in time for the start of the season, Ohio State freshmen defensive back Amir Riep and wide receiver Elijah Gardiner are official Buckeyes. Riep, out of Cincinnati and Gardiner from Texas, are the latest prospects in a star-studded 2017 recruit class to be considered 'full fledged Buckeyes.'

The first two-deep roster, released this week in anticipation of the Indiana game, includes 15 freshmen on the offensive and defensive two-deep rosters--11 of them are true freshmen.

"We don't recruit people with potential as much as we recruit great players," Urban Meyer said of his freshmen class on Tuesday's Big 10 teleconference. "That's a philosophical change because the days of having people for five years is very unusual--although we have a few this year, but normally you don't have many at all. We make that clear on the front end of recruiting and we make that clear that once they get here there's no seniority. The best player is going to play."

Meyer and the Buckeyes continue to recruit at a high level. With the weekend commitment of receiver L'Christian "Blue" Smith of Huber Heights over the weekend, the Buckeye 2018 class has again elevated to No. 1 nationally according to most recruiting services.
