The defensive line is expected to be the strength of the 2019 Ohio State defense....but what else is new. The Buckeye d-line, led by position coach Larry Johnson, year in and year out produces NFL talent and year in and year out replaces it with more NFL talent. That unit this year will include junior Chase Young, who was one of two Buckeyes (JK Dobbins) to be listed on the Big Ten's pre-season "watch list" and senior Jonathon Cooper. The Gahanna product will be a leader on the D-line this year and has high expectations for the unit.
"The whole entire motto of 'The Rushmen' is upholding the standard and make sure that the standard never drops," Cooper told WTVN. "So many great guys keep coming in and out of the defensive line, we have to make sure that the guys that you put in there are upholding the standard that the other guys set for us. You have to keep that bar up high so that we can keep playing at a high level and keep winning as many games as we do."
Cooper talked with me from Big Ten media day in Chicago Thursday. We also discussed D-line coach Larry Johnson, summer conditioning, the defense as a whole and Michigan being named preseason favorite in a poll conducted by Cleveland.com. A big thanks to Jerry Emig and Michael Basford of the Ohio State Sports Information staff who arranged the phone interview with Cooper after my flight to Chicago was cancelled by thunderstorms. You can check out the entire interview here.
