Buckeyes Add One More To Stellar 2020 Recruiting Class

It wasn't long ago that the February signing day for football recruits was a big deal. These days, however, it's more of a footnote. Ohio State 2020 recruiting class, which numbered 24 after the December signing day, added one more, 4-star athlete Cameron Martinez out of Muskegon, Michigan. Martinez is a long time Buckeye commit who was originally planning to sign with the rest of the class in December, but when the news broke that Buckeye defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was leaving to become head coach at Boston College, Martinez--who many project as a college defensive back--chose to wait. Ohio State coach Ryan Day eventually hired Kerry Coombs to replace Hafley and Martinez was satisfied and remained a Buckeye.

While Martinez may well play for Coombs and the Buckeye defensive staff, Day said Wednesday that the talented high school player of the year in Michigan, will get a look on the offensive side of the ball.

"We're going to start him at H, and kind of have him in the backfield and take some hand offs," Day said of Martinez who was a dynamic quarterback at Muskegon. "Who knows (where he'll end up), that's what exciting about him. He does have the ability to (also) go play nickle or go play corner. We're going to allow him to have a lot of feedback in this. We want him to have a lot of say in what he likes and feels most comfortable with."

A peek at Martinez highlight tape will give you an idea of why Ohio State wants to see what he can do with the ball in his hands. He not only was an electric quarterback, but also was a dangerous kick and punt returner.

With Martinez now officially a Buckeye, the class is complete. It features 25 prospects with 14 of them already enrolled at Ohio State, and going through winter conditioning drills. The class ranks No. 1 in the Big 10 and No. 5 nationally, behind only Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and LSU. According to 24-7 sports, four in the class are 5-star players, led by receiver Julian Fleming, the No. 3 prospect overall and the top wide receiver in the nation. The other 5-star prospects are offensive lineman Paris Johnson, receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and quarterback C.J. Stroud. Those four 5-stars are all among the 14 players on campus already and all will participate in spring football beginning March 2nd. You can get a peek at the highlights of the 5-stars below.
