Plants of the Week - Magnolias

Its late winter and early spring that we keep our fingers crossed hoping our early blooming Magnolias make it thru any cold blasts…which does not happen quite frequently. Magnolia stellata (Star), x Ann and Jane, loebneri ‘Merril’, and soulangiana (Tulip or Saucer) are a few of the more common early bloomers. And yes, they can really put on a show for that very early spring color; again, hoping it lasts. But when it comes to planting or considering planting one of these, we think flowers and not the real beauty of the plant through the growing season – branching habits, bark colors, leaf sizes and shapes, fall colors, many are multi-stemmed, etc. These all are tremendous additions of small to medium sized trees, with the early spring flowers as a bonus. So, consider these magnolias for their landscape / tree benefits, and let us keep those flowers in the back of our minds as a bonus – if they last thru the ups and downs of late winter / early spring weather.
