Ohio State was trailing TCU 21-13 in the third quarter and lost star defensive end Nick Bosa to what the ESPN TV crew reported as an abdominal strain. Despite the adversity, the Buckeyes made sure the final game of Urban Meyer's suspension wouldn't end in defeat. The Buckeyes scored three touchdowns in the span of 4:01 to seize control of the game and would go on to beat the Horned Frogs 40-28.
Quarterback Dwayne Haskins got the comeback started by connecting with Parris Campbell on a 63 yard screen pass that went for a touchdown, trimming the TCU lead to 21-19. On the Horned Frogs next possession, defensive tackle Dre'Mont Jones stepped in front of a shovel pass by TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson and returned the interception 28 yards for a score, putting the Buckeyes ahead 26-21. Moments later, a poor snap on a TCU punt led to a Buckeye block, giving Ohio State possession at the TCU 24 yard line. Haskins cashed in on the miscue by hitting K.J. Hill for a 24 yard score to extend the lead to 33-21.
TCU would cut into the lead in the waning moments of the third quarter on a touchdown pass by Robinson, but the Buckeyes iced the game with an 8-play 75 yard drive capped off by a Haskins 5 yard touchdown run.
Haskins finished the night 24-38 for 344 yards, with 2 touchdown passes and a TD run. The Buckeye running game was steady as well, led by J.K. Dobbins 121 yards on 18 carries. Overall, Ohio State gained 526 yards and while the defense gave up 511 to TCU, it also produced two touchdowns.
In addition to the Jones TD, the defense had a first quarter touchdown when Bosa had a strip sack of Robinson and Davon Hamilton recovered the fumble in the end zone. Bosa's injury occurred during a pass rush early in the 3rd quarter. His status going forward is unclear.
The victory puts an end to Ryan Day's stint as interim coach, as Meyer returns to the sideline next Saturday against Tulane (3:30 kickoff on the Big Ten Network).
