COLUMBUS, Ohio (24-7 News)--Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther is saying they are not working under any timetable while he and the city look for the next leader of the Columbus Police Department.
Ginther told reporters at City Hall Thursday he plans to conduct a nationwide search for the new chief and is looking for someone to be a change agent who will exceed community expectations for public safety.
Current CPD Chief Kim Jacobs recently announced her decision to retire at the end of next month.
According to the mayor, the search will be conducted slowly to find the right person because by the end of 2019, the city's police force will have more active duty officers than at any time before in Columbus history.
Ginther called the search for a new police chief the most important decision of his time as Mayor. Jacobs has been serving since 2012, under then-Mayor Michael Coleman.
