Legionnairres Outbreak at Mt. Carmel Grove City Turns Deadly

GROVE CITY, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio Department of Health has confirmed that one person has died as a result of the outbreak of legionnaires' disease at the brand new Mt. Carmel Grove City facility.

The hospital says at least seven cases of the disease have been confirmed. Legionnaires is a form of pneumonia, with symptoms including muscle aches, fever, and chills.

The hospital is now working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to disinfect the facility's entire water supply, and identify the source of the outbreak.

The ODH says Legionnaires generally kills about 10-percent of those diagnosed in the general population, but that can rise to about 1 in 4 if it breaks out in a hospital or nursing home.

The new Grove City hospital opened in late April.
