CPD: Don't Celebrate New Year's With Gunfire

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Columbus Police have a simple request as residents celebrate the new year at Midnight--don't fire a gun.

Columbus Police Deputy Chief Michael Woods and Dr. Mysheika Roberts, with Columbus Public Health, appeared in a Public Service announcement video, released Monday, asking folks not to resort to celebratory gunfire once the clock strikes midnight.

CPD receives numerous calls every year shortly after midnight of folks taking to the streets or backyards to fire gunshots into the air to celebrate the new year.

Officers say not only is it dangerous, but it is illegal.

A man was arrested and charged with felonious assault after he injured another person with celebratory gunfire, shortly after midnight on New Year's Day last year.
