COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--After fans and supporters led an effort to "Save the Crew" in 2018, reports surfaced on Wednesday that could have led them to organize a push to "Save the Crew" again.
First reported by the Dispatch, Columbus Crew SC executives are considering a "rebranding" of the team for 2021, when the team moves into its new downtown stadium.
The original report indicated changing the team's name, colors and logo were under consideration.
ABC-6 talked to fans Wednesday that said they would consider canceling their season tickets if the team changed its name, saying the movement was called "Save the Crew" not "Save Columbus Soccer."
In response to the reports, Crew President and GM Tim Bezbatchenko released a statement Wednesday, saying the team will not change its name.
Back in 2017, reports surfaced that then-Crew Owner Anthony Precourt was considering moving the team to Austin, Texas. That prompted the "Save the Crew" movement, and eventually led the team to be sold to Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Owners of the Cleveland Browns.
Construction began on the team's new downtown stadium last year, with it slated to open in mid-2021.
