Most Complaints of Excessive Force by CPD During Protests Unsubstantiated

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A report on complaints from citizens on the use of excessive force by Columbus Police Officers, during the protests and unrest in May and June, found that most of the claims are unsubstantiated.

The city brought in a third-party law firm to collect and investigate the complaints, with over 90 police officers interviewed, and hundreds of hours of video examined.

Investigators say most of the cases were dropped because the officers involved could not be identified.

Over 20 complaints were forwarded for possible criminal charges.

Mayor Andrew Ginther was not happy with the results, adding that the actions he witnessed did not live up to his expectations or the expectations of the community.

Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan says he is proud of the officers that responded, with over 200 injured during the unrest. He also says he understands the need to look at current police policies.
