Man dies in East Side Fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A fire at a home on Columbus's east side turned fatal early Friday morning.

Columbus firefighters responded just before 2AM at a residence along Weyant Avenue. Crews responded where the fire and smoke was working through the roof of the home, in the rear.

During a search of the home, firefighters recovered 54-year-old Michael Gwinn Sr. He was transported to OSU Wexner Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators did set off a burglar alarm when they entered the home, but did not find any working smoke detectors. They says it appears Gwinn was overcome by smoke when trying to make his way out through the smoke.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
