NEW YORK (AP) — DIZZYING HEIGHTS THAT WOULD TERRIFY MOST PEOPLE ARE JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR AN ELITE NEW YORK CITY POLICE UNIT THAT SPECIALIZES IN HIGH-RISE RESCUES. THE NYPD'S 400-OFFICER EMERGENCY SERVICES UNIT TRAINS YEAR-ROUND ON TALL BUILDINGS AND BRIDGES SO THEY CAN MOVE BEYOND THINKING ABOUT THE RISK TO THEIR OWN LIVES TO HELP SAVE SOMEONE ELSE'S. TEAM MEMBERS SAY THEY START PLANNING AS THE CALL COMES IN ABOUT HOW THEY CAN APPROACH THE PEOPLE IN TROUBLE TO GET THEM TO SAFETY. SUCCESSFUL RESCUES HAVE INCLUDED WINDOW WASHERS DANGLING 17 STORIES UP A SKYSCRAPER, DISTRAUGHT PEOPLE THREATENING SUICIDE ON THE VERRAZANO-NARROWS BRIDGE AND A THRILL-SEEKER WHO USED SUCTIONS CUPS TO CLIMB TRUMP TOWER. THEY'VE EVEN SAVED A PARAGLIDER WHO CRASHED INTO THE STATUE OF LIBERTY.
