Clemency Denied for Alva Campbell Jr.

TO GO WITH AFP STORY US-JUSTICE-EXECUTIO

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio Parole Board has voted to deny clemency for Alva Campbell Jr., who is set to be executed next month.

Campbell was convicted of the murder of Charles Dials from April of 1997, during a carjacking and kidnapping.

The Parole board heard arguments for Campbell's clemency last week. Campbell argued that his difficult upbringing, with alcoholic parents and a physically abusive father, resulted in his criminal behavior throughout his adult life.

Lawyers for Campbell also argued that errors occurred during the mitigating phase of his trial. In the report released Friday, the parole board voted 11-1 against clemency.

Campbell is scheduled to be put to Death on November 15th at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
