Northeast Columbus Homicide ties all-time record

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Police in the city of Columbus are now investigating the 139th homicide of 2017, following an incident early Tuesday morning on the northeast side.

Officers say 37-year-old Aaron Fletcher Leapheart III was shot through the back door of his apartment along Olmstead Avenue shortly after midnight. Police say it appears Leapheart tried to flee through the courtyard of the apartment complex, but succumbed to his injuries there.

Police do not yet named a suspect or a motive.

With it being the 139th homicide of 2017, it ties the record for most homicides in a calendar year in Columbus, which was originally set back in 1991.
