Buckeye Hoops Land A Stud

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann took to Twitter Monday to wish his wife Lori a Happy Birthday. A day later it was Holtmann who got the present.

Alonzo Gaffney, the top rated player in Ohio's 2019 recruiting class and ranked among the best players in the country announced his commitment to Ohio State.

Gaffney is a bona fide stud. He's a 5-star prospect who is 6'9, 190 and has shown the ability to play both around the basket and on the perimeter. Gaffney is out of Garfield Heights, one of the top teams in the state. He transferred there last season after winning two state championships at Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph. Garfield Heights started the year ranked among the nation's top teams but ended up bowing out of the state tournament when they were upset in the District Final by Shaker Heights. Early in the season, Gaffney's ability drew some high profile visitors, as Cleveland Cavaliers stars LeBron James and J.R. Smith, along with then teammate Dwyane Wade checked out one of his games. Gaffney and that high profile visit was the subject of a WKYC Cleveland sports story earlier this year.

According to 24-7 Sports, Gaffney is the 3rd best power forward in the country in 2019 and the 18th ranked prospect overall. Ohio State has not landed a top 20 ranked prospect since D'Angelo Russell back in 2014. He chose the Buckeyes over North Carolina, Florida, Michigan State and others.

Here are some more highlights of Gaffney, posted on YouTube.
