Michael Slager Gets Life Without Parole for Murder

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The man who doused Judy Malinowski with gasoline, and set her on fire, will spend the rest of his life in prison, without the chance of parole.

Michael Slager was given that sentence Thursday after taking a plea deal for the Malinowski's murder.

The incident happened in 2015, and originally, Slager plead no contest to a charge of felonious assault, and sentenced to prison for that charge.

Malinowski died in 2017, and the Franklin County Coroner determined the severe burns she suffered in the incident directly led to her death. That prompted prosecutors to come back and charge Slager with murder.

Thursday's guilty plea from Slager means he avoids the possibility of the death penalty, which prosecutors were originally seeking on the murder conviction.

Malinowski was deposed via video from her hospital bed about the incident, and that deposition would have been allowed to be submitted in court, had the murder case gone to trial.
