Report: Gene Smith Considered Four Other Candidates to Replace Meyer

COLUMBUS, Ohio (24-7 News)--Reports are beginning to surface regarding the process Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith went through to choose Urban Meyer's successor.

Sources say Smith had a list of four other candidates he was considering before ultimately hiring offensive coordinator Ryan Day for the job.

The report says Smith never contacted these potential hires but included among them were retired Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, Iowa State's Matt Campbell, Syracuse's Dino Babers, and an unnamed NFL coach.

All of the names on the list had Ohio connections having previously held jobs with in-state schools who play in the MAC.
