Columbia Gas Expects Record Usage in Bitter Cold

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Columbia Gas is expecting customers to use a record amount of natural gas, with the bitter cold settling in for Wednesday and Thursday.

Spokesman Dave Rau says usage on Wednesday is expected to be 75-percent higher than a typical January day, with the record usage day set back in January 1994.

In terms of safety, Columbia Gas says homeowners should use a carbon monoxide detector, which is different from a smoke detector, and some models of CO detectors double as smoke detectors.

Officials also advise you to have your furnace serviced by a professional, and do not try to heat your home with a stove or other household appliance.
